Innovation Centres

The South East Midlands is home to 36 Innovation Centres and Science Parks, an incredible resource for companies wanting to invest and grow in our area.

Leaders from many of these centres and parks now meet on a regular basis at a SEMLEP organised event and have pledged to join forces and play a leading role in attracting national and international companies to the area. The centres and parks agree there is clear merit in forming a regional grouping, with strength in unity.

Importantly, all are more than willing to pass on business leads which were not a match to their sites, and to collaborate to ensure that new businesses received the best local offer possible.

"SEMLEP is rightly ambitious to continue to attract international companies and therefore it makes sense for the accommodation options to be presented in one place by SEMLEP so that companies looking to move to the area appreciate all that the region has to offer and are compelled to visit in order to review the many different options.” Silverstone Park Commercial Park Roz Bird

SEMLEP’s next Innovation Centre and Science Park meeting will take place on 22nd September at the Daventry iCon.

We are now in the process of gathering information on all 36 of our centres and parks, so you can see at the click of a button which of these hubs might best suit your business needs. Here's information to date:

Enterprise Zones

In November 2015 the Chancellor announced that Luton had been successful in its bid to be granted an Enterprise Zone, one of just 26 unveiled in the Spending Review.

The new Luton Airport Enterprise Zone, around 395 acres in size, will consist of three linked sites surrounding Luton Airport: Stirling Park, Century Park and Airport Business Park.

SEMLEP, in partnership with Luton Borough Council, submitted its application to government in September2015 and the new Enterprise Zone looks set to create over 7,200 direct jobs. Additional jobs are set to be created at the airport itself as a result of expansion and SEMLEP and LBC estimate that the total number of jobs created will therefore exceed 10,000.

In 2011 SEMLEP received government backing to launch the Northampton Waterside Enterprise Zone and regenerate nearly 120 hectares of brownfield land along the town’s river front.

Figures released in November 2014 show the Government’s 24 enterprise zones have created 12,530 jobs, attracted 434 new businesses and generated over £2 billion worth of private investment since opening for business.

SEMLEP's Enterprise Zone in Northampton has proven to be a vital part of the success story, creating nearly 700 jobs as it forges a reputation as an automotive and manufacturing centre of excellence.

Communities Secretary Eric Pickles said: “SEMLEP's Northampton Waterside Enterprise Zone is a success story. The zone has created nearly 700 jobs since it opened and with the ambition and drive that is being shown there I know there will be greater successes in the future. It’s further proof that enterprise zones are delivering, creating thousands of jobs, attracting billions in investment and driving forward local economies.”

Here are just a few highlights from our Northampton Enterprise Zone

  • Carlsberg UK, the fourth largest brewer in the UK, has expanded its Northampton brewery with the addition of a bottling plant in March 2013. The facility is part of a £60m development undertaken at the Enterprise Zone site. The plant now has a capacity of 60,000 bottles of beer an hour and can bottle up to ten million bottles per year at maximum speed. It has generated 67 new jobs and attracted £25m private sector investment.
  • The University of Northampton’s student accommodation has been built within the Enterprise Zone, providing 460 student apartments, while creating 20 new jobs and £24m private sector investment
  • Construction is nearly complete on the £20 million redevelopment of Northampton Castle railway station, creating 63 new jobs and a new gateway for the town.
  • Work is well underway on the zone’s new Innovation Centre which will support the University and provide a new home for up to 55 start-up businesses.
  • Cosworth’s new £12m Advanced Manufacturing Centre, the first of its kind in the UK, will manufacture components and assemble some of the world’s most advanced engines to global automotive manufacturers.
  • On St James Mill Road resident companies Freefoam as well as Cosworth are expanding, creating a combined 110 new jobs.
  • Plans have been submitted to expand Franklin’s Gardens to allow Northampton Saints to host the most prestigious European matches.
  • New offices will also be constructed along the riverside at number four St Peter’s Waterside, creating opportunities for businesses looking to relocate into our Enterprise Zone. This marks the first new office development in Northampton since the 1990s.
  • Church’s Shoes has announced its intention to expand their factory onto the former First Bus site in St James, creating 150 jobs.
  • £7 million has been committed to improving the infrastructure in the Enterprise Zone ready for new developments at St Peter’s Waterside.
  • The design has been agreed and full plans being finalised for Northamptonshire County Council’s new offices, bringing 2,000 workers back into the town centre.
  • Work is underway on a £1 million investment by Phipps Brewery to bring the Albion Brewery on Kingswell Street back into use, creating 20 jobs.
  • Construction has started on a new Premier Inn hotel on the site of a former council car park, which will support the development of Northampton’s Cultural Quarter, creating 60 jobs in the process.
