The Industrial Strategy

The UK's Modern Industrial Strategy aims to make Britain the best place to start and grow a business, and a global draw for innovators. This national plan presents huge growth opportunity for businesses, entrepreneurs and communities in the Oxford-Milton Keynes-Cambridge Growth Corridor, already recognised as one of the greatest untapped corridors in the UK and a key strategic priority for growth, development and investment.

The strategy sets out a plan to boost productivity and earning power of people throughout the UK. There are 5 foundations to the strategy: ideas, people, infrastructure, business environment and places and four Grand Challenges to put the UK at the forefront of the industries of the future.  The focus is on productivity-led growth in all businesses of all sizes by increasing collaboration and developing skills. It aims to create a business environment equipped for the challenges and opportunities of new technologies and ways of doing business. To support and enable this, government has launched a number of Sector Deals, partnerships between government and industry aiming to increase sector productivity aligned to the four Grand Challenges.

Every business, every research and education institution, every public organisation has a role in delivering the aims and objectives set out in the Industrial Strategy.

The creation of Local Industrial Strategies was announced alongside the Autumn Budget 2017, to further strengthen local leadership in the delivering the Industrial Strategy, building on local clusters and sector strengths and delivering on economic opportunities.

SEMLEP is responsible for developing the Local Industrial Strategy for the South East Midlands by Spring 2019, working in collaboration with government. We are also working with the Local Enterprise Partnerships, the Mayoral Combined Authority in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and partners from across the Growth Corridor to create a shared economic vision and Local Industrial Strategy delivery plan which maximises the whole Corridor's global recognition and potential to drive economic growth for the UK.

Work on the Local Industrial Strategy for the SEMLEP area has begun. The views of business in this is crucial.

When: Wednesday 11 July, 10.30am-12.30pm

Where: Transport Systems Catapult, 170 Midsummer Boulevard, Milton Keynes, MK9 1BP.
