Northampton: European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development info event by SEMLEP

The rural economy plays an important role in the SEMLEP area. A quarter of people live in and a third of VAT registered businesses are based in rural areas.

Join our information event to learn more about the European Funding which is available for rural growth. This event will provide an overview of the EAFRD Funds and explain the priorities, it will also give you the opportunity to speak to the Fund Managers to discuss your project ideas.

The three funding strands are:

Tourism Infrastructure

Tourism and visitor economy is a key growth sector for the whole of the South East Midlands LEP (SEMLEP) area. This funds seeks to grow and enhance the rural tourism sector, which accounts for around 8% of total employment in the LEP area, supporting around 59,400 jobs (2012). The fund may support projects that;

  • that create sustainable rural tourism and leisure activities
  • that create economic benefits to a number of business not just the applicant business
  • that include the use of local suppliers particularly for food and drink

Business Development

The aim of the call is to help create new and expand existing micro and small businesses in the rural area leading to new jobs and increased productivity. The types of project that maybe supported are:

  • farming businesses looking to diversify into non-agricultural activities
  • help to develop new services or manufacture new products
  • create quality serviced tourist accommodation, where there is clear evidence of need and will achieve formal accreditation through industry bodies

Food processing

Food processing is an important growth sector across the SEMLEP area. In 2012, the output of the Food and Drink sector was £829.3m. Nearly half of the businesses in the Food and Drink Manufacturing are classed as small and micro.

The aim of this call is to contribute to the development of measurable and sustainable growth in SEMLEP area's food and drink sector. Priority will be given to projects that:

  • introduce new technologies, techniques or processes, increasing the productivity of the business
  • construct new and high-value distribution hubs, to add value to existing supply chains and/or connect to distribution networks across other LEP areas
  • bring locally distinctive foods to the market, which would contribute to the unique food & drink offer of the SEMLEP area
