Showcase Sector: High Performance Technology

Our area has significant assets in High Performance Technology (HPT), and is at the forefront of developments in Next Generation Transport, including Connected and Autonomous Vehicles.

These assets include Silverstone’s circuit and technology cluster, Nissan’s European Technical Centre, Cranfield University’s Aerospace Technology Institute, the Transport Systems Catapult in Milton Keynes and vehicle testing facilities at Millbrook Proving Ground. New automotive testing facilities are being developed in Daventry and Northampton.

Our strengths go beyond assets and expertise. The South East Midland’s USP is as a test-bed for new and emerging technologies in Next Generation Transport. There is a strong role for the South East Midlands in developing and commercialising NGT innovation, as well as shaping the debate on the impact of these technologies on future land use and urban design, including being a central part of the Government’s plans for the future CAV testing eco-system.

Employment growth in businesses in High Performance Technology sectors across the South East Midlands was at 25% (2009-14), compared to the national picture at 6%.
