Showcase Sector: Manufacturing & Advanced Technology

Revenue in the global packaged food market is expected to reach $3.03tn by 2020 and, the British Footwear Association has identified significant growth potential in high-end designer fashion markets in China and South Korea. Brexit and greater automation in the workplace provide both challenges and opportunities for this sector, with Brexit particularly creating an uncertain future for primary producers. The Food Enterprise Zone in Central Bedfordshire and the Woodlands site in Aylesbury Vale will bring about greater collaboration between food and farming businesses, better links to research to help provide innovation in the sector and, increased workforce specialisms and efficiencies in the supply chain. Other assets in this sector include Colworth Park, home to Unilever’s Global Development Centre and R&D, the Northamptonshire Food and Drink Cluster and the Northamptonshire Footwear industry cluster. Employment growth in Manufacturing and Advanced Technology businesses grew at 5% in the South East Midlands (2009-14) compared to 1% nationally.

The MAT Sector

Our activity in this sector includes working with the Food and Drink Sector Board for Northamptonshire. We are adopting this group’s successful model to assist food and drink businesses across the South East Midlands area over 2018, with the support of the Mallows company.
