SEMLEP Chief Executive marks National Apprenticeship Week

11 March 2015

Chief Executive Daniel Mouawad visited the Automated Technology Group (ATG) Silsoe, Bedford as part of National Apprenticeship Week.

Daniel spent time meeting apprentice Kyle and former apprentice Robbie who explained the unique way that ATG invest in their workforce of the future by rotating apprentices through different departments of their business as part of a three year programme. Kyle is now 18 months into his apprenticeship and Robbie, who completed his apprenticeship 2 years ago is now undertaking a management course.

Daniel said, “It is really inspiring to have met the apprentices and staff at ATG. They are an exemplary company at the cutting edge of engineering technology helping to grow the UK’s economy".

Robbie added: “I’m really enjoying mentoring the new apprentices. It wasn’t so long ago that I was an apprentice too and I can remember how overwhelming it can be when you first start. They can ask me questions and I show them how to do things if they’re not sure."

ATG have a long history of successfully recruiting Engineers of the future through apprenticeships and are thrilled that their Academy programme is proving successful. Since establishing the Academy three years ago, 43 apprentices have been through the innovative programme with 100% of them being offered employment with ATG on completion.

ATG Training Manager, Pauline Nichols explained: “One quarter of the ATG workforce is made up of advanced apprentices. This demonstrates a huge commitment from the company about the investment they are prepared to make in training for the skills of the future. First and foremost, we want our apprentices to learn the skills that the business needs. We encourage them to participate in skills competitions and to speak to students in local schools to inspire them to find out about careers in Engineering."

Daniel also met with current apprentice Josh, who recently won Gold in the UK Skills Competition for Engineering as part of a team with his colleague James. They are now being progressed to the next stage of the World Skills competition and will hopefully form part of the UK squad, travelling to Abu Dhabi in 2017 to represent England.

ATG are currently recruiting for 12 new apprentices to join their team. For more information please visit
