Connecting schools and business - SEMLEP launches new programme

11 January 2016

A new programme designed to create strong links between businesses and schools and to help young people achieve their career potential is this month being launched across the South East Midlands by SEMLEP.

SEMLEP's Careers and Enterprise Programme, part of a national programme set up to inspire and prepare young people for the fast-changing world of work, aims to link businesses and schools so that 12 to 19-year-olds gain an understanding of growth business sectors, make the most of opportunities within the labour market, develop relevant skills and choose appropriate qualifications.

SEMLEP's recently recruited Enterprise Coordinators are now visiting and approaching schools and businesses across the area, inviting schools to sign up to the programme and business owners and senior managers to become Enterprise Advisers.

These newly recruited Advisers are being asked to volunteer their time to work closely with the senior management team in a local secondary school or college, to help develop and shape careers and enterprise strategies, employer engagement plans and to draw on their own business experience and local business networks.

SEMLEP’s Head of Enterprise, Lindsay Mitton, explained: “Our fast-changing and growing economy brings many opportunities, however young people are not always in a position to take advantage of them. Many employers find it hard to recruit a workforce with the right skills and attitudes, resulting in quality and high value jobs going unfilled. For this reason we are delighted to unveil this employer-led programme which promises to inspire and prepare young people for work and help address our skills gap.”

Becoming an Enterprise Adviser is a unique opportunity which will enable business owners and managers to join an exclusive network of like-minded peers and support a local school or college and improve opportunities for young people.
