Connecting students to future careers Jason Pritchard, Director of Excel Structures

Bedfordshire based business, Excel Structures, connects students and construction careers by hosting their quarterly networking events at Sharnbrook Academy.

On the 5 July, Excel Structures hosted their second lunchtime networking event at Sharnbrook Academy. Why? To establish greater links between students and local businesses.

It has been proven that students who receive four or more employer encounters are 86% less likely to end up not in education, employment or training.

Jason Pritchard, Director of Excel Structures, created the idea of collaborative in-school networking events while volunteering as an Enterprise Adviser, alongside the school’s Careers Leader Joanne Saward.

Jason has been working as an Enterprise Adviser since 2017, working in collaboration with Sharnbrook Academy to better embed careers within the curriculum.

By bringing the students and businesses together, students get an insight into the world of work, while making invaluable connections to local businesses.

Peter Rayner, Enterprise Coordinator at SEMLEP said:

“For many years Jason has hosted construction industry network events at his own premises in Bedford. Bringing the location of these events into a local school has enabled students to attend, make connections and experience real-life business meetings.

“This is a fantastic example of a small adjustment that businesses can make to help inspire our future workforce.”

Jason Pritchard, Director of Excel Structures added:

“Holding this event at Sharnbrook Academy provides an opportunity to invite interested students to understand more about the workplace and the fast-changing construction industry, while networking with local businesses - All without leaving the school premises. 

“This is just one example of how business and schools can collaborate for mutual benefit. I would encourage other local businesses to try it.”

SEMLEP is currently looking for local, ambitious businesses, like Excel Structures, to give an hour of their time to inspire the workforce of tomorrow.
