They need our support Jason Pritchard

Bedfordshire based business, Excel Structures Limited is a specialist contractor offering a range of off-site building systems. In 2017, Director of Excel Structures, Jason Pritchard, joined SEMLEP’s Enterprise Adviser Network after seeing his own children’s careers experiences first-hand.

“Attracting young people into the industry”

“I wanted to get involved with the EA Network as I’ve got three boys myself who all have got different ideas about their careers, I understand how hard it must be for teachers to deliver careers advice suited to everyone. Therefore, I decided to help other young people to understand the opportunities available to them.

By working with Sharnbrook Academy, I can help young people understand more about modern methods of construction and attract more young people into my industry.”

“Seeing their perception on the world of work is really interesting”

Since joining the network, Jason has been involved in a range of careers activities, including a year 8 engagement programme, workplace visits, assemblies, networking events and working alongside the staff to embed careers within the curriculum.

“Recently, I have moved my quarterly networking meeting to within the Academy. This gives the students the opportunity to get a better understanding of the ‘world of work’ and gives the businesses a chance to meet the future workforce. I was surprised but very encouraged, that so many SMEs were keen to come to the networking events and support young people in their endeavours.”

“The benefits of working with a local school are endless”

“Personally, I now have a better understanding of how to frame offers of employment to young people, what they are interested in and what they don’t know.”

“The Gatsby Benchmarks are asking a lot from schools. They need support from the business community to help them to achieve their goals.”

Since working with Sharnbrook Academy, Jason has expanded his network, raised brand awareness and is now looking to recruit an apprentice.

What would your advice be for another SME thinking of giving an hour?

“It is well worth it. There are lots of benefits for your business, it supports the workforce of tomorrow, it attracts young people to your business, and it helps you to fulfil your corporate responsibility.”

Benefit your future workforce by giving an hour.
