Samuel Whitbread starts 2020 with excellent careers provision

2 January 2020

Samuel Whitbread Academy is recognised for delivering students with high-quality career advice, guidance and support - helping students prepare for the world of work.

Having just achieved the gold standard, the school made a number of changes to the way they inform students about careers, including embedding practical, hands-on careers advice throughout lessons.

Ian Butler, Vice Principal at Samuel Whitbread Academy said “Having a stable careers programme across years 9 to 13 ensures our students are successful not only at Samuel Whitbread, but also beyond as they embark on their future journeys.

“We are proud that we are giving every student the chance to fulfil their ambitions.”

Alongside adapting the curriculum, Samuel Whitbread is working with a number of local employers to inspire students and provide first-hand experiences of employment. Local businesses include Wilmott Dixon and Fortem who meet directly with students delivering assemblies, mock interviews and attending careers fairs.

As a result of this work, students feel better prepared to join the workforce and have an enhanced understanding of careers.

Peter Rayner, Enterprise Coordinator at SEMLEP has worked alongside Samuel Whitbread to support the development of their careers programme.

Peter added “Samuel Whitbread Academy is the first mainstream school in the Central Bedfordshire area to meet all 8 Gatsby Benchmarks for good careers guidance. The enthusiasm and can-do attitude of their Careers Leader, Emma Foreman, has resulted in a comprehensive careers programme that reaches all areas of the school. This is a tremendous achievement for everyone connected to Samuel Whitbread Academy.”

Samuel Whitbread’s careers team, Emma Foreman and Julie McMillian worked tirelessly to ensure students are putting their best careers foot forward in 2020.

Emma Foreman commented, “We are really pleased that careers education is at the forefront at Samuel Whitbread Academy. We feel it is really important that students are supported in fulfilling their aspirations beyond school and are fully aware of all the choices available to them beyond Year 11 and Year 13.”

SEMLEP continues to support schools to develop their careers programmes, benefitting students across the South East Midlands. For more information about these activities, visit www.semlep.com
