Jon Rawcliffe

Investment and Innovation Manager

Jon joined the team in Summer 2015. His role spans several areas of operation and specific activities.

His primary focus is upon inward investment. This includes helping international companies to launch new investment projects in the SEMLEP area (ie, foreign direct investment), supporting intra-UK relocations - and new site openings - and enabling expansions for those businesses already trading here. Examples of the type of support available include -

  • land/premises search, selection and acquisition
  • help with recruiting new staff, training, up-skilling and relocation
  • guidance in respect of access to funding, including grants and investment
  • corporate networking, access to trading partners and developing supply chains
  • introductions to key government departments/local authorities and chambers
  • introductions to universities/colleges and professional services providers

Working alongside colleague Richard Cook, this assistance is offered free of charge and either delivered directly from SEMLEP or achieved indirectly through collaborative working; in conjunction with the Growth Hub (our in-house business advisers) and numerous other key stakeholders.

In addition, Jon also looks after our sector activity centred upon ‘high technology and innovation’ (HTI). This includes elements of advanced engineering, automotive,  future mobility (EV & CAV) and our area’s expertise in future aerospace/aviation technology.

Attracting deserved global recognition, the SEMLEP area offers niche specialisms in fields such as F1/motor-sport, power-train and testing, and increasingly for many aspects associated with ‘next generation vehicles’; intelligent mobility, connected/autonomous and low carbon/electric vehicles. Jon is vice-chair of the Automotive Council’s regional engagement group – which amalgamated in 2020 with the equivalent group for the aero sector.

The HTI/future mobility sector is consistently generating a number of new - frequently large - project enquiries, with investors and businesses clearly being attracted to the area by the combination of innovation, R&D, and a highly skilled work-force. SEMLEP is a key partner to the Silverstone Technology Cluster.

Richard Cook now looks after all sector activities for logistics and food/drink.

Jon works closely with CEO Hilary Chipping in respect of the ‘Oxford-Cambridge Arc’ initiative. In parallel, he is also the primary conduit into the Dept International Trade’s “Capital Investment” team; whose purpose is to help attract significant scale investor funding into large real estate and infrastructure projects.

Other activities include; Jon is a key member of the property development, infrastructure and investment group, along with some involvement in the -

  • marketing groups for the Northampton & Luton Enterprise Zones
  • banking/professional services group

A qualified Chartered Surveyor with circa 20 years’ experience gained as a commercial property consultant focused on helping businesses relocate into/within the Milton Keynes, Northampton and wider regional markets.

Specialisms include corporate consultancy and technical sales, with a strong reputation for providing reliable professional advice. RICS member since 1997, and a member of the RICS East Midlands Regional Board. Jon is one of six committee members behind the ‘PDQ’ (property development quarterly) series of networking events.
