Could an apprenticeship benefit your career?

18 April 2018

Thinking about becoming an apprentice, but want to know more?

Starting your career with an apprenticeship is a great way to get a head-start in the area you want to work in. An apprenticeship is a job with first-hand training directly in the working environment, allowing you to gain valuable experience, knowledge and a qualification. Some of the key benefits of apprenticeships are:

  • Learning while you are earning
  • Training in the skills employers need
  • Development of core competencies for work and life
  • Excellent progression opportunities through demonstrating your worth
  • Different apprenticeship levels to suit your career pathway
  • Other employee benefits including paid holidays, etc.

We want to help young people understand the benefits apprenticeships have and how they can offer an opportunity into a rewarding career. This is one of the reasons we supported and exhibited at the National Apprenticeship Show

Paul Thompson, Employer and Skills Manager at SEMLEP said “The range of roles and levels of entry for apprenticeships, provide pathways and opportunity for everyone into all sectors and industries and help develop their key skills and competencies within the working environment. Employers see apprenticeships as a great way of harnessing a talent pipeline and developing people for the future.”

Paul is an Apprenticeship Champion and heads a team working with the Careers & Enterprise Company to support young people to make informed choices about their careers and pathways, whilst developing the skills required by local employers.

Our own digital marketing and social media apprentice, Tayla Blackman, spoke to a range of students about her journey to becoming an apprentice “I had always thought I would go to University but had no idea of the amazing opportunities there are in being an apprentice. The National Apprenticeship Show helped to explain the fantastic opportunity for pupils, parents, teachers and business to gain a better understanding of the wide range of apprenticeships there are available. Tayla is a Young Apprenticeship Ambassador and is happy to provide more information about what it is like as an apprentice tayla.blackman@semlep.com
