Bedford Town Centre Heat network

Arup, on behalf of BEIS and supported by Bedford Borough Council, has completed an extensive heat mapping exercise for Bedford Town Centre.

Funded through the Heat Network Delivery Unit, the mapping exercise has identified a number of opportunities for heat networks in their town centre. The heat network could potentially use the Energy Recovery Facility at Rookery South as the heat source, using unrecyclable waste as fuel.

Bedford Borough Council is in contact with SEMLEP and the Greater South East Energy Hub, who will both play a role in assisting the development of a feasibility study for the project. Given that the South East Midlands Energy Strategy indicated that the SEMLEP area lags behind national averages for heat network infrastructure, supporting heat network projects is a priority for the area.
