Growing Places

Growing places is all about investing in, and ensuring the provision of physical capital - transport links, housing, and energy, digital, green and social infrastructure. I.e. all the components that allow our places, and businesses and communities within them, to work effectively together.

Investing in Growing Places

Investment in our area’s infrastructure is critical in supporting new economic opportunities and sectors.

SEMLEP and partners are investing in significant infrastructure projects which are foundations for the future long-term prosperity for the South East Midlands and contribute to unlocking the opportunities of the wider Oxford-Cambridge Arc. We work in close collaboration with local authorities, neighbouring LEPs, and other strategic partnerships including England’s Economic Heartland to make the case for strategic and coordinated investment in our infrastructure to drive growth in the national economy in a way that protects and enhances our natural environment.

Growing Places focuses on four key areas:

  • Strategic Transport and Local Transport Investments
  • Housing – working with local authorities, the planners forum and other groups to identify blockages to housing growth
  • Strengthening ICT – broadband and mobile capacity and capability and supporting areas to bid for government funding to assist this
  • Energy – working with partners to deliver the priorities set out in the South East Midlands' Energy Strategy. This includes promoting best practice in energy generation, distribution and network management , supporting the transition to zero-carbon by promoting renewable energy sources and supporting businesses in energy-related innovation and adoption of energy efficient practices. SEMLEP is part of the Greater South East Energy Hub. This is a body to coordinate, manage and develop the technical feasibility studies to promote and accelerate delivery of new energy infrastructure. For more information visit the Energy Hub website

You can also read more in England’s Economic Heartland’s Planning for Growth publication. The Highways England Investment Plan also provides details of major road infrastructure investments for the area.
