Housing

The South East Midlands plays an important role in providing housing for the nation. Over the 2010/11-2015/16 period, we built 50,000 new homes, accounting for 6% of the England total. Housing is a critical asset for our area. It is fundamental to people’s lives, integral to the quality of our places and a prerequisite to economic growth more generally.

Housing in the South East Midlands

The population and household numbers in the South East Midlands is expected to grow 21% and 28% respectively by 2039. Local Authorities in the SEMLEP area plan to deliver 130,000 new homes over the 2016/17 – 2025/26 period. Planned housing delivery is sufficient to meet projected household growth.

SEMLEP works with planning authorities across the area to help them overcome barriers and blockages to deliver planned developments.

We do this in a number of ways, including using Local Growth Fund and other Funds to help unlock housing sites; and working with groups and forums, such as the South East Midlands Planners Forum and the Property Development, Infrastructure and Investment Delivery Advisory Group (PIIDG) to monitor housing delivery, link with government funding initiatives and help ensure joined-up housing and other infrastructure for the whole area, in a way promotes quality of life for new and existing communities.
