Northampton welcomes a royal visitor

8 August 2012

Northampton Celebrates their Danish connections with a royal visit

Last week Danish flags were flying proudly across Northampton town as they welcomed Her Royal Highness Princess Benedikte of Denmark to Northampton.

The Royal visit was an opportunity to celebrate the strong links between Northampton and Denmark. Northampton is the UK headquarters to Carlsberg, a major investor in our town, and a small hub of other Danish companies who have expanded into the UK.

The visit started with a trip through the town’s past with a visit to the world famous shoe collection at the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery. At the reception HRH Princess Benedikte was shown her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria’s wedding shoes. The Princess donated a pair of her own Chanel shoes to the collection before moving on to the Guildhall.

At the Guildhall the Princess was greeted by representatives from four Danish companies based in Northampton. Carlsberg, Opus Energy, Gemco, DKL Marketing and Nordjysk Eldhandel are all working in Northampton and playing an important part in the town’s economy.

The Princess was also given a guided tour of the Northampton Alive exhibition by the Leader of the Council, Councillor David Mackintosh. The exhibition allows visitors to walk through the Northampton of the future and showcases some of the major regeneration projects that are already starting to shape our town.

Councillor David Mackintosh, Leader of Northampton Borough Council, said:  “It was a real privilege to welcome HRH Princess Benedikte to Northampton and recognise the enduring historic and economic links we share with Denmark."

“This was also a chance to talk about our town’s bright future. It is a really exciting time for our town. We have already seen a number of Northampton Alive projects completed and yet more progressing."

“Northampton is open for business. And our Enterprise Zone is bringing even more opportunities to the market. You only have to look at how Northampton has been a platform for success for Carlsberg. Our town is ready to welcome international businesses looking to invest in the UK and take advantage of joining an exciting town that is Alive with ambition, enterprise and opportunity.”

The visit finished with a tour of the Carlsberg brewery, a building the Princess opened almost 40 years ago. As well as talking with staff the Princess found out about the brewery’s plans to invest £40m to build a new bottling line and create up to 60 jobs.
