SEMLEP survey set to shape business support

22 July 2015

Companies throughout the South East Midlands are being urged to share their views and suggestions as part of the region’s largest ever business survey which will help shape business support in the area for the next 12 months.

For the third year running the South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP) has launched its Business Survey which focuses on business related issues and asks companies about issues such as the challenges they face in terms of business growth and recruiting staff with the necessary skills.

Over 1,700 businesses will be selected at random across the South East Midlands - an area which covers Aylesbury, Banbury, Bedford, Bicester, Daventry, Kettering, Leighton Buzzard, Luton, Milton Keynes and Northampton - will be contacted by telephone before the start of September and will be asked a range of questions that will include finding out what support businesses need and want from SEMLEP.

SEMLEP Chair, Dr Ann Limb CBE DL, said: “We are committed to listening to businesses and will use these survey results to design our business support for the year ahead, just as we did last year.

“In last year’s survey business support was flagged up as a priority for many companies so we ramped up our Velocity growth hub which provides support, advice and funding to start-ups and small to medium sized businesses.

“Last year’s results concluded that over one in three businesses struggle to recruit staff with the necessary skills. We have engaged more businesses through our Skills Forum which brings together our colleges, universities and other skills providers. We also launched joint prospectuses which encourages businesses to work more closely with the universities and colleges in this.

“We have also secured investment through our Local Growth Deal with government to help fund a number of major transport and infrastructure projects that will support businesses to grow.”

“It is only by telling us what your business needs to grow that we can shape a programme of support that truly addresses your needs. Don’t hold back, tell us what you need and want to grow your business.”

To ensure all companies across the South East Midlands have the opportunity to have their say SEMLEP has designed an online version which will be open until September 1st 2015. BMG Research will carry out this year’s Business Survey on behalf of SEMLEP.
