Finding the right people essential for growing businesses

9 December 2016

High growth businesses must ‘surround themselves with the right people’ to help them achieve their goals, a conference has heard.

More than 100 businesses attended a ‘Scale-up Central’ conference held at Franklin’s Gardens in Northampton to hear expert advice from speakers representing British Business Bank, London Stock Exchange and the Business Growth Fund.

The event was shaped by Velocity, the growth hub managed by the South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP), and formed part of a day-long showcase of growing companies across the region.

Stephen Catchpole, chief executive of SEMLEP, said: “Scale-up companies look set to be a central part of the Government’s industrial strategy and we look forward to seeing that take shape.

“There are a lot of scale-up companies in the South East Midlands and there’s potential for many more. The development of the Oxford/Cambridge/Milton Keynes corridor gives our businesses an opportunity for rapid growth and it’s an exciting time for the region as a whole.”

Delegates heard from a range of companies who shared their journey to growth, including insights from digital agency Klood, Milton Keynes-based Heald Solicitors and Secured by Design, which has recently expanded into Japan.

David Bell, of Secured by Design, said: “Growth is exciting but also challenging. Finding the right people is so important.

“It’s vital to not just look for financial backing, you have to look for the right kind of support for your business and the right people to help give it.

“You need to be open-minded, know where you want to be and know who you want to help get you there. Surround yourself with right people to help you achieve your goals.”

The South East Midlands is recognised as one of the fastest-growing business economies in the country, with huge numbers of start-ups and high growth businesses.

The event also saw the launch of the Velocity Marketplace – a resource hub of local companies offering a full range of products and professional services and bringing them together to create a ‘one-stop shop’ for the business community.

Gayle Pope, Head of Business Services at SEMLEP, said: “It was great to see so many companies come together to help launch our Marketplace, which we hope can prove to be a valuable resource for the business community and really boost the local economy.”
