Industrial Strategy

In November 2017 the Government published the Industrial Strategy: Fit for the Future, a long term plan to boost the productivity and earning power of people throughout the UK, setting out how we are building a Britain fit for the future.

Fit for the Future focuses on the five foundations of productivity: Ideas, People, Infrastructure, Business Environment and Places.

It sets out Grand Challenges to put the UK at the forefront of the industries of the future. The first four Grand Challenges focus on the global trends which will transform our future: Growing the Artificial Intelligence and Data Driven Economy, Clean Growth, Future of Mobility and our Ageing Society.

As part of the Industrial Strategy, government also published Sector Deals, partnerships between government and industry to tackle sector-specific issues.

Local Industrial Strategy

The Industrial Strategy recognises the leading role that LEPs have in shaping and delivering locally-led economic growth. Local Enterprise Partnerships are tasked with developing Local Industrial Strategies. These strategies will align with the national industrial strategy and will be long-term. Government has identified the Oxford-Milton Keynes-Cambridge Growth Corridor area, which includes the South East Midlands, as one of three trailblazer areas for the first of the Local Industrial Strategies, due to be complete by March 2019. The area was chosen because of our potential to drive wider regional growth, focusing on clusters of expertise and centres of economic activity.

SEMLEP will be working with neighbouring LEPs, the Greater Cambridge and Peterborough Combined Authority, Local Authorities and other partners to develop this Local Industrial Strategy.

Creating the Local Industrial Strategy for the SEMLEP area

This new strategy will be drilling down in the detail of what successes, strengths and opportunities businesses in our area have compared to their competitors across the world.

Its aim is to identify the specific investments and actions the public sector - govenment, local government and SEMLEP, in partnership with business should take to drive productivity in the South East Midlands area and enable those industrial sectors where we have local specialisms , to grow and compete on the world-stage.

The Local Industrial Strategy, co-produced with government, is a long-term plan to invest in the areas businesses tell us you need public intervention and support.

Emerging priorities

Emerging priorities include a specific focus on actions that:

1. Tackle the shortage of good quality employment premises and space, particularly for smaller, expanding businesses critical to our supply chain and sector strengths

2. Position our area as the central place to commercialise new technology, bringing in and generating more of the innovation, R&D strengths of the universities and businesses within the Oxford-Milton-Keynes-Cambridge Growth Corridor

3. Maximise and promote high-tech development and high value specialisms we have in next generation vehicles and logistics

4. Provide specialist business support to those businesses who have the potential for rapid growth

5. Tackle issues that growing businesses have with access to energy and core utilities.
